Our Top Tips and Tricks

Lawn bowls is hugely popular in the UK and beyond and s attracting new players and fans at an impressive pace. If you are new to the sport, it can be hard to get your head around the rules at first. So let us help! We are Jack and Bowl, and before anything else, we are keen bowls players ourselves. Here is everything you need to know about the main bowls techniques and objectives and the importance of having the right equipment.

Understanding the Game

The main aim in lawn bowls is to have your bowls come to rest closer to the small white target ball, known as the jack, than those of your opponent. Points are scored based on how many of your bowls are nearer to the jack than your opponent’s nearest bowl, and this is counted once all have been played in an end. Sounds simple? In theory, yes. In practice, there are so many factors that can affect your game! So, here are some lawn bowls tips and techniques to help you out a little.

Lawn Bowls Techniques and Tips

If you’re looking to hone your lawn bowl strategy, the following tips could be useful to bear in mind:

  •         Hold the bowl comfortably with your fingers evenly spaced; don't grip too tightly. This will give you a much smoother delivery.

  •       A good stance is key to getting the desired results, so start with your feet shoulder-width apart and keep your body balanced.

  •         All bowls have a bias - this is the curve it generates when rolled on a flat surface. Take the time to understand how your bowl curves and plan your delivery accordingly.

  •         There’s a lot to learn by observing players who are more experienced than you. Watch bowls matches on TV and take a look at your fellow players to pick up some techniques.

  •         Well-maintained equipment makes all the difference, so keep your bowls clean and polished to ensure that they perform as you expect.

  •         We know it can be tempting to rush in those big moments, but take your time with your delivery. Rushing often leads to poor weight or line. So, take a deep breath, line up, and focus.

  •         It can be really helpful to jot down notes about green speed, your performance, and tactics. Taking a look over this later can help you to spot patterns and improve faster.

  • Last but not least: stay positive and enjoy yourself! Above all else, lawn bowls should be a way for you to stay active and social while having fun, so try to keep this in mind.
