The Beginner's Guide to Bowls: Where Should You Start?

Pointing You in the Direction of the Best Bowls for Beginners

Whether you're looking for a serious bit of competition or just want a new way to keep active and meet people, getting started with bowls can seem daunting. With so many options to choose from, it's essential to find the equipment that suits your skill level and budget. Here Jack and Bowl, we’re ready to help! Here are our top tips on finding the perfect bowls for beginners.

Understanding the Basics

Finding the right bowls can feel like a challenge, but we are on hand to guide you in the right direction. We stock a wide range of lawn bowls for beginners, and we know that size is often the hardest thing to judge when buying them online. Ladies usually opt for bowls size 00 - 3, while men tend to buy sizes 3 - 6. This is a general rule of thumb of course, as everyone’s hand sizes are different. Male customers will probably find size 3 or 4 a good buy, with ladies going for 1 or 2. So start there if you aren’t sure!

You’ll also need to consider things like bias (how much a ball curves as it rolls), and grip style too. Don’t worry - we’re here to explain these to you! Our team is here to guide you every step of the way.

New or Pre-Owned Bowls?

One of the biggest decisions you’ll face is whether to invest in new bowls or opt for pre-owned ones. Both options have their benefits! New bowls mean that you can enjoy the latest designs and innovations and are a great choice for more competitive players.

Pre-owned bowls, on the other hand, are a great choice for total beginners or those on a budget. All of our pre-owned bowls are really well-maintained and offer excellent value for money. We inspect and grade all our pre-owned stock to ensure you receive a high-quality product.

Tips for Getting Started

Once you’ve chosen your bowls, it’s time to get playing! Most bowls clubs welcome beginners and provide a supportive environment in which to learn and improve. Many even offer coaching and loan equipment - allowing you to test out some bowls and find out what suits you!

Like any sport, bowls requires practice. So, spend time getting to know your bowls and experimenting with different techniques as you familiarise yourself with the basics of the game. Don’t be afraid to ask for feedback from more experienced players too! Their constructive criticism can really help you to improve your game.
