Everything You Need to Know
Lawn bowls is an amazing way to keep fit and active, no matter how much sport you have played before. If you are getting pretty serious about bowls, then it makes sense to focus on your fitness on the green. We love to play ourselves, and over the years, we have tried plenty of things to improve our performance. Here are some of the easiest, most effective ways to ensure that you are playing at your fullest potential. From finding the best to having a pre-game routine, here are our top tips.
Get into a routine
Playing at a consistent level starts with having a solid routine in place, and this can come in all kinds of forms. For some people, it’s picking up the bowl with a certain hand or placing their feet on a specific spot on the mat every time before they bowl. This is known as a pre-shot routine. For others, it is all about keeping stress to a minimum in the hours before playing or setting aside a specific time every week to play. If it works for you, keep doing it!
Boosting your balance
The more you play bowls, the more your balance is going to improve. There are things that you can do to help that process along even more, though. Bowls shoes are designed for balance and comfort, and a well-fitting pair will act as the perfect foundation while you hone your skills. Take your time while you are playing, too. A lack of balance often comes from trying to rush, so really concentrate on your form.
A lack of balance can also come from a disability or injury. If you use a walking stick to help with your balance, remember that we stock walking stick protectors to make your stick suitable for the bowls green!
Ask for advice
If you want to reach the same level of fitness as some of the other players at your club, see what they are doing to achieve that. Bowls is known for being a very open, welcoming sport, and your fellow players are a valuable source of advice. Whether it is keeping fit by getting their steps in off the green or some bowls-specific techniques that they have perfected over the years, you will usually find they are very happy to share some tips with you.
Analyse your games
After a match has finished, take a moment to analyse what you did (or didn’t!) do to get the result that you wanted. Consistency comes from building good habits over time, and it also comes from weeding out bad ones. So if you have noticed that you are doing something that is hindering your play or you have spotted a weak aspect of your game that other players are taking advantage of, you know what to work on!
