Ready to find out more about lawn bowling bowls sizes? Let’s get started!
How does bowls sizing work?
First of all, how do bowl sizes work? Getting to grips with this is essential before you start exploring which bowls size is right for you. Bowls sizes start at 00, which is the smallest, to 5 or 6, which are the largest sizes. Different brands can have their own sizing charts, though, so it’s important to check out whether they offer any sizes outside of that range. Don’t worry, we can point you in the right direction.
As a general rule of thumb, male players tend to be suited to a larger lawn bowl size while female players will be better served by sizes at the lower end of the scale. No two players and their dimensions are the same though, which is why it is so important to try some different sizes out!
Trying out different bowl sizes at a local club
One of the best things you can do is try out some bowls in person. If you are planning to buy yours online, though, how can you do that? Head down to your local bowls club! They will have bowls for new members or ones trying the game for the first time to use, and this is a really good way to see which size is best for you. You should also ask your fellow players for some insight on sizing, too!
How to know if a bowls size is right for you
When you are trying on a bowl for size, wrap both of your hands around the widest part of it so that your thumbs touch at the bottom and your middle fingers touch at the top, forming a circle around the bowl. If you can do this without there being a big gap at the top, you probably have the right bowl for you! Moving on, you will want to hold the bowl as if you are about to deliver, swinging your arm forward and back. If you can keep a firm and comfortable grip on it, that’s another win! Lastly, see if you can comfortably hold the bowl at arm's length for 30 seconds.
Remember: you should always play with the largest and heaviest bowl that is comfortable for you. So it may take some trial and error!
